Rhythm & Time by Cheryl Rubin

The Jazz Gallery is excited to present Rhythm & Time, a new series of paintings by New York City artist Cheryl Rubin. Classic jazz compositions are the inspiration for these expressive, process-driven abstract paintings.

Each work begins with listening to classic bebop jazz compositions, which set the tone and provide creative inspiration. Rhythms are mapped directly onto the canvas through poured acrylic paint and oil stick drawings, forming a visual score that sets the structure. Layers of paint are manipulated in response to previous ones, much like a jazz soloist who listens and responds.

Paint flows and pools in guided ways. Imagery is covered by subsequent layers, until the energy of rhythm and the passage of time emerge as a unique visual world.

When the painting is finished, a title is chosen to match its feeling — a final homage that transforms each work into its own kind of score. The selected compositions are a tribute to the great composers and musicians whose work continues to inspire our imagination, deepen our creative consciousness, and open our minds to another realm, as these paintings seek to do as well.

All paintings are available for sale. 20% of the sale price of each painting will be donated to The Jazz Gallery.

Free Event; No tickets needed.
