Acclaimed vocalist-lyricist-arranger FAY VICTOR & her Herbie Nichols SUNG Quintet celebrate the rich legacy of jazz composer Herbie Nichols anew with Life Is Funny That Way, and bring it singing boldly into this century. It is both a loving celebration and thorough reconsideration of the great jazz composer Herbie Nichols. This landmark work is the first time that a full program of lyrics were written & recorded for Nichols’ compositions. The innovative and wholly contemporary arrangements –also by Victor– are brought to vibrant life by a dedicated and profoundly gifted quintet of veteran jazz performers. Please join us at the Jazz Gallery for this special performance of some of the most special music from the jazz canon.
"An avant-garde Nina Simone with the performance punch of Betty Carter, Victor’s unabashed acrobatics mesmerize… 4 STARS --MOJO Magazine
"There’s no simple equation for the influences that fed into the music of Herbie Nichols—nor their outcome. But Fay Victor’s reinterpretation of the music feels like it’s unleashing elements that had previously been contained. Victor devised lyrics to the originals, and augmented them with musicians (saxophonist Michaël Attias, pianist Anthony Coleman, bassist Ratzo Harris, and drummer Tom Rainey) who are a perfect match for Victor’s singular approach. This is old-school music made for the present day. This is new-school music that would’ve been loved back in the day" --The Best Jazz on Bandcamp: April 2024
