“New Beginning” the first solo album of young Venezuelan Latin-Grammy nominated pianist Gabriel Chakarji presents fresh-sounding music composed during his time living in NYC. As a composer, Gabriel is striving to musically bring together contemporary jazz and improvised music techniques with elements of the Venezuelan rich music culture, especially the African influences of rhythm and drum parts, call and response, and the spiritual and social context of the music.

Socially, the music is a direct expression of what some young musicians immigrating to NYC live day by day, specifically the recent Venezuelan Diaspora and its effects on the culture inside and outside the country.

“All my influences of South-American, Caribbean and Black-American music have one source in common, Africa. We’re trying to bring out all the shared elements, the places were many musical traditions live together, instead of focusing on the genres and stereotypes, we need more of this spirit in a society that suffers from racism, prejudice, and wars. We want to create a space where music can shift paradigms” -Gabriel Chakarji
