SARAH ELIZABETH CHARLES & JARRETT CHERNER
VOCALIST SARAH ELIZABETH CHARLES, PIANIST JARRETT CHERNER UNITE ON THE BEAUTIFUL ALL-ORIGINAL DUO RELEASE TONE. Steeped in jazz harmony, timeless melody, and poetic verse, their sublime co-written songs address the need to care for ourselves, each other, and the world. Available November 6th, 2020 on BaldHill Records.
As accomplished composers and leaders in their own right, vocalist Sarah Elizabeth Charles and pianist Jarrett Cherner bring a wealth of artistic resources to their first release as a duo, Tone. The album’s eight songs — finely wrought, emotive, richly melodic — were co-written over a span of four years, and although Charles and Cherner began recording before the Covid-19 crisis, they were finally able to finish the project in quarantine in their Brooklyn home. Fittingly, the sound of this duo is intimate and warm, yet its dynamic range is large. Cherner’s expansive piano harmonies, Charles’ intricate multi-tracked vocal parts and subtly placed echoes and effects: these elements grow to fill the sonic space, as the songs touch on transcendent themes of selfless love and living with purpose and intention.
ALEXIS CUADRADO
Barcelona-born and Brooklyn-based Alexis Cuadrado is an award-winning composer, producer, bandleader, bassist and educator. He has become one of the most sought-after musicians in the New York scene. NPR music says: “Listen to Cuadrado’s compositions and you’ll find every reason to take him seriously.” NY magazine: "His intricate and sharply defined compositions show that he’s tapped into something much deeper."
Cuadrado's work draws from the crossover of jazz, world, flamenco and new music, exploring the confluence of the Hispanic and American cultures, as well as embracing a deep commitment to comment on social issues. His recent output is a restless exploration of cross-disciplinary works that embrace poetry, film, radio-podcasts, dance and design.
DEZRON DOUGLAS
New York-based composer, bandleader, sideman, educator, and 2019 DownBeat magazine “Rising Star” bassist Dezron Douglas has established himself as a musician’s musician. One of the most in-demand young bassists in jazz today, Douglas is respected not only for his talent but also for his dedication to the authenticity of the music. Having recorded on more than 100 records as a sideman, he has six solo recordings, and his most recent EP, “Black Lion,” was released in 2018. As a sideman, Dezron has performed and recorded with jazz luminaries including Pharoah Sanders, Cyrus Chestnut, George Cables, Keyon Harrold, and Makaya McCraven and is a member of the Ravi Coltrane Quartet, Louis Hayes Groups, Enrico Rava/Joe Lovano Quintet, Steve Turre Quartet/Sextet, and the David Murray New Octet.
DAFNIS PRIETO
From Cuba, Dafnis Prieto's revolutionary drumming techniques and compositions have had a powerful impact on the Latin and Jazz music scene, nationally and internationally.
"The eight originals and one standard... convey emphatic narratives and unrestrained expressiveness, fulfilling Prieto's wish for this project to be 'transparent.' In these confusing times, it's a welcome respite to hear music that's so passionately honest." — DownBeat ★★★★ Review
