Nathan Reising is a Brooklyn based alto saxophonist, pianist, and composer from Baltimore, MD. Known for his work with Tyshawn Sorey’s Sextet and collaborations with numerous composer/improvisor peers, his latest quintet project invites folk-inspired songwriting into the complexity and virtuosity of the contemporary jazz landscape. The music was recorded in December of 2025, featuring vocalist Sarah Rossy, pianist Lex Korten, bassist Noam Tanzer, and drummer Evan Hyde.
“I’ve always been interested in the vulnerability that only the human voice can provide. The lyrics I wrote for these pieces are very personal, filled with reflections on relationships, familial love, fear of rejection, and the meaning of dreams. I wanted to showcase that side of myself while still embracing modern jazz conventions of angularity, collective improvisation, and rhythmic athleticism. We’ve also been experimenting with forms which can be spontaneously modified with each performance, drawing direct influence from my mentor Tyshawn Sorey's approach to set construction. With each member of the band contributing their unique voice, this project is an open window into my musical world that celebrates the emotional and the analytical in equal measure.”
