The brainchild of inquisitive bassist/composer Nick Dunston, Spider Season features Kalia Vandever on trombone and effects and DoYeon Kim on gayageum, a traditional Korean zither – undoubtedly the first (and only) improvising trio in human history featuring that particular instrumentation. The band extracts a plethora of songs and sonic landscapes from Dunston’s compositions and their collective improvisational chemistry, landing on crafted yet alive sets of music – as Pitchfork Magazine writes, “each scrape, thump, or screech has a tangible effect on the room’s energy.” This performance celebrates the debut of the trio’s self-titled debut album; reflective of the introspective and transformative nature of the trio, they will be performing a new set of music, compositions derived from extrapolations and mutations of previously recorded utterances.
