Roy Hargrove’s The Love Suite: In Mahogany

“You have to do this because you love it... You have to love it, and breathe it. It’s your morning coffee, it’s your food. That’s why you become an artist... You can’t just put a little bit, you got to put it all in there.” – Roy Hargrove

The two-time Grammy winner, trumpeter, and artistic beacon was only twenty-three years old when he was honored with the commission that resulted in his five-part profound expression of heart, A Love Suite: In Mahogany

Composed over the course of a couple days, it was one of two prestigious opportunities presented by Jazz at Lincoln Center, and an early occasion for Roy to intimate his rich instinct for assembling musicians in exciting and explorative gestalt. It premiered in 1993 at Alice Tully Hall in New York City, receiving rave reviews.

Never performed live in its entirety since, A Love Suite: In Mahogany represents a unique snapshot of a man within a greater poignant and enduring musical legacy; a singular sonic event from a time our understanding of an exceptional artist was barely unfolding.

Presented to you now over three decades later – in the space he created, with the musicians he congregated – we reawaken this monumental work to embody and give passage to the joy, freedom, and engagement of life and sound that Roy Hargrove instilled in all of us. That is... We put it all in there.

“A flat-out marvel – maybe the most vivid example we have of Roy’s ability to marshal hard-bop fire in a new form, steeped in swinging tradition but sparking and crackling right now.” – Nate Chinen
