“Trickster, a four-piece band led by guitarist Miles Okazaki, is best understood in both cerebral and visceral terms. On the one hand, it’s a delivery system for some proudly intricate and idiosyncratic compositions, the byproduct of a deeply rigorous mind. On the other hand, it’s a go-for-broke quartet, capable of shifting the ground underfoot without ever losing its balance.” – Nate Chinen, “Take Five” (WBGO)
“a reminder of just how inspiring it can be to hear top-shelf music made without constraints, and with a readiness for the unexpected.” - Troy Dostert, All About Jazz
“this band of masters shuffle and traverse ideas, motifs, and a thoroughly modern collision of influences. They make it sound easy.” - Will Layman, Popmatters
“Okazaki is a wildly versatile musician, freakishly precise, but also full of emotion. Trickster, an aggressive but not ear-splitting blend of contemporary jazz and rock styles, is his best band” – The Paris Review
“Trickster is an easy band to love” - George Grella
“convulsive beauty, propulsive rhythm, elusive meaning...This is freedom." - Robin D.G. Kelley
“Trickster is an easy band to love” - George Grella
Trickster was formed in 2015 as a side project while Miles Okazaki, Anthony Tidd, and Sean Rickman were working as the rhythm section for Steve Coleman and Five Elements. The group has released four albums of compositions by Miles Okazaki on Pi Recordings (Trickster, The Sky Below, Trickster’s Dream and Thisness) and a live album (Live in Brooklyn), on Cygnus Recordings. Trickster features Miles Okazaki on guitar, Matt Mitchell on piano, Anthony Tidd on bass, and Sean Rickman on drums. This performance will feature the young phenomenon Paul Cornish, subbing for Matt Mitchell on piano.
