The Birsa Chatterjee Quartet blends the beauty of American and Indian classical musical traditions with their unique style and approach. The mission is to unite the gap between the genres and continue the effort to add to the great musical innovations to both traditions. Led by Birsa Chatterjee, a first-generation American who received disciplined tutelage in both black American and Indian classical music from an early age, the quartet is formed by some of the most talented new artists in New York’s booming music scene.

With degrees from The Oberlin Conservatory of Music and The Juilliard School, Chatterjee has quickly established himself as a leading musician and at the mere age of 25 has performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, The Blue Note Jazz Club, and Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Times Square to name a few.

Drawing from influences such as John Coltrane, Nikhil Banerjee, Duke Ellington, Zakir Husain, and Charlie Parker, the quartet will play mostly original music written by Birsa Chatterjee but will also perform Indian folk songs with new stylistic choices that give a fresh light to these cultural classics. The arrangements include contributions from legendary musical composers like Rabindranath Tagore and Lalon Phakir.

The Birsa Chatterjee Quartet aims to continue John Coltrane’s effort to unite American Classical Music with Indian Classical Music. Their unique approach promises to captivate music lovers across the globe, explore innovations of both traditions, and captivate audiences around the world.
